Is Denali Open in 2021?

Most of Denali’s campgrounds were open in 2021. Advanced reservations for all campgrounds are strongly recommended; they can be made as early as December 1, for the following summer. Campers are asked to do their part in maintaining social distancing.

Why is Denali closed?

The Denali Park Road is now closed about halfway along its 92-mile length due to a landslide associated with permafrost melting. A thawing rock glacier underneath a 100-yard section of the road going through Polychrome Pass is causing the road to slump.

Located far from any airport or large city, Denali is a wilderness park. Reaching the park can take several hours (or even most of a day), so we recommend that you plan a minimum itinerary of 2 nights in the area, which gives you one full day and part of two others.

Denali National Park is where the tourists go, although we local backpackers & hikers love it too. It is one of the best opportunities for viewing of wildlife & scenery. In contrast, Denali State Park is accessed mainly for wilderness hiking & backpacking.
